Arts events in the week of 5-10^th November

Artist-collective The Stove has put together a week-long programme that celebrates Dumfries and offers folk the chance to be part of the future of their town. Six specially commissioned art projects will be presented in public spaces along with public performances and talks by leading thinkers + film screenings and concerts.

Highlights include:

·     ‘Why Andy Warhol is Shite’ – performance lecture by International Artist Bill Drummond

·      ‘Street Shrines’ – new work around Dumfries by one of Scotland’s leading street/public artists, Mike Inglis

·      ‘Greyfriars 1’ – world premiere of Suzanne Parry-John’s song cycle about the Nith and launch of artist Lisa Gallacher’s bespoke clothing collection TDRM:Dumfries

·      ‘Nith Scoping’ – Environmental Artist Hannah Brackston invites investigation of Dumfries’ river

Also look out for Marions Preez’s blue ‘Frames’ around the town and whatever you do – don’t miss ‘The Lost Supper’ a simultaneous voyage back in time and into the future + great food!

Dumfries Music Conference

The Stove Presents as part of Inbetween:Dumfries and in partnership with the Scottish Soulful Weekender (www.scottishsoulfulweekender.com) & MusicPlus (www.musicplus.org.uk) the inaugural Dumfries Music Conference - DMC.

DMC is a two-day gathering of musical minds. It will include workshops, talks, panel Q&As and entertainment.

DMC - is a platform for musical people to share their experiences, knowledge and enthusiasm for music. We've got a brilliant line-up!

DMC will take place on the day before the Scottish Soulful Weekender (Thursday 1st November) and on the morning of the Weekender's first day (Friday 2nd November).

And, rather brilliantly, it will all be FREE!

Inbetween:Pontypool

The Willmeister made good use of his colouring in skills to sharpen his wits at the Pontypool seminar. The observant viewer will notice that he didn't go over any of the lines. Top man.

REWARD FOR LOST MANUSCRIPT

One of our 'Inbetween' commissioned artists Suzie, has lost her manuscript after a meeting at The Stove yesterday. Suzie with her baby in a buggy took a walk from Devorgilla bridge to Brooms Road car park and managed to lose a rather hefty A3 size manuscript with the only copy of the work she's doing for the Stove written on it.

There is £50 reward for anyone who finds it and returns it to Suzie or The Stove.

An Update and an Invitation

The Stove committee have been pushing forward on all fronts over the past year and we would like to invite you to a social/catch-up meeting on Wednesday 5th of September at 7pm at The Stove building. 

At this meeting we will report back on progress with the building and projects and be discussing the future structure of the Stove as an arts organisation. The Stove began as an open invitation and opportunity for D+G practitioners we’d like to discuss ideas we have for sustaining this ethos into the future and are eager to involve as many of you as possible in these discussions.

Some of you may also be aware that we have been commissioning artworks to accompany a 2 week long programme of public arts activity in and around Dumfries at the start of November. Artist Mike Inglis was awarded one of The Stove's Inbetween commissions – Mike is one of Scotland’s leading street-artists (Spaceboy - http://spaceboy1966.blogspot.co.uk/ ) - he will present a short illustrated talk on 5th Sept about his practice and what he has planned for the November events.

We will also be introducing a two day symposium we are presenting in November where invited speakers will be addressing issues surrounding the identity of contemporary market towns in the Uk ‘Place, Sustainability and Future Culture’ in Dumfries on 8+9 November 2012
